A lifelong guitarist and bass player, Juan has been touring and producing music professionally for over 15 years. His foray into the industry came by way of his tv show Juan’s Basement, in which bands were filmed + recorded performing in his Brooklyn basement. He had the privilege of working with diverse artists such as M83, Beach House, Silver Jews, and Japanese Breakfast, among many others. The basement is also where drums were tracked for Vampire Weekend’s eponymous debut.
Meanwhile, Juan toured and produced records with Small Black, a NY band signed to Jagjaguwar, and later to 100% Electronica. The band helped define the diy synthpop sound that emerged in Brooklyn, alongside likeminded artists like Neon Indian, Wild Nothing and Toro Y Moi.
Throughout the years, Juan has been collecting vintage and modern recording gear and instruments, as well as collaborating with an array of artists on writing, production and mixing. He’s done projects with MNDR, Briana Marela and Psychobuildings, as well as remix releases with Health, Washed Out, and most recently Cults. Across his writing and production catalog, he has gotten placement in numerous movies and tv shows, such as Riverdale, Along For The Ride and Project X. Commercial clients have included Google, Pitchfork, NYC Ballet, Sephora and CoS.
Juan mostly works out of his Gowanus project studio, but he’s also available for remote projects, on a per album or song basis. He takes a creative approach to producing/mixing, utilizing analog outboard, tape and synths, as well as the latest UAD plugins and digital processing. Check out some of his favorite gear here, and well as a selection of music and projects he’s worked on over the years.
